Finder not working?

For the last few weeks i cannot view items in finder and sort by date/file name etc
I get the below effect happening

If i change to anything other than the second view (the 4 parallel horizontal lines) it works. (and this is how I've been using it for sometime)

Also i cannot see "new" icons i create on the desktop - i can only see in finder with the "tree" view.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
