finder opens in new window

Hello all,
I have a problem with "finder". When I double click on a folder it always opens in a new window (and the new window sometimes is resized kind of randomly).

However, the option "Always open folders in a new window" is unchecked.
Does anybody have an idea of the reason?

Which of the many views (CMD+1, CMD+2, CMD+3, CMD+4 - Icon, List, Column or Cover Flow VIEW) do you employ?

List, but I tried also icons, etc.
My macbook is early 2008 and I am using Snow Leopard,
