Finder Problems

I have recently begun having problems with my Finder app. When I open Finder from the dock, from the HD volume on my desktop, or anywhere else for that matter, my sidebar options are not available. I have tried all the preferences settings that I can find and nothing works. Does anyone have any suggestions? Im running Leopard.
