Whenever i search for something in Finder, i'm led to an entirely different file. For example, i'd search for a particular .mp3 file, and it would show up as a .env file, the root directory would lead to an entirely different file, and previewing/opening would lead to the file that the root directory would show. It's doing this for every single file (but only those on my external hard drive, not the internal). The same applies to Spotlight, and re-indexing it didn't help. When i look through the folders and locate the files myself, i have no trouble accessing/opening/using them. Would erasing and reformatting my external help? I just wanted to get a main consensus that that would help before actually going through the trouble.
I've been having lots of issues in general with my 45-month-old macbook lately (agonizingly slow processing, fans literally constantly at 6200rpm, broken up graphics on the desktop toolbar, main volume fluctuating on its own, a kernel panic--i saved the problem report if anyone wants to see it). Only things i've tried so far are zapping the PRAM and repairing disk permissions, both of which didn't help, but the broken up graphics and volume fluctuation are gone for now.
Any tips would be appreciated! Please let me know if you need more info, and i apologize if i'm discussing too many issues here.
