finder sidebar locked in open / save application windows

Hi, maybe I'm an idiot and this is obvious but I can't expand the finder sidebar width in any "open" or "save" dialogue windows from WITHIN applications. It works fine when viewing any folders with the finder...? Latest Mavericks - it also works fine in the older 10.8.5....

Any help would be appreciated....
