sidebar gone?

Hi, I'm new to this forum and cant figure out how to start my own thread. Anyway, my sidebar has gone. I work at a school and while i was out a kid screwed around with my computer and lost my sidebar and he doesn't know what he has done. Its not that little button in the top right hand corner of the window or there is no dot to drag out half way down the side. There is nothing in the preferences to get this back just what you would like to go in there if it was there. Can anyone help? please
