Is there any way to adjust the default width of Finder's sidebar? Every time I open I a folder I just created, the sidebar is very wide (default width). After I resize it, it will stay that way in future visit. I have done this for most of my commonly used windows.

However, is there a way so set it such that I don't even have to resize the sidebar for newly created folders?

The "alt" key? ;)

You know, I don't recall having to do anything special to get the Sidebar width the way I want it on new windows. What OS version do you have?

Well I'm still running 10.5.8 so maybe 10.6.8 is different. Maybe try the Use as defaults button in Show View Options?? Set up the root folder window the way you want it first.

Ah - I see the problem. I didn't realise I had it. I'm on Lion and it does the same. I had this idea that holding the alt key (sorry, sorry - option key) would set the default along with the column width. Not so. You could try dragging the com.apple.finder.plist to your desktop from the user/library/preferences file. If you then restart the Finder to create a new plist file this might just reset the default to something sensible (along with all your other defaults.) Could be worth a try.

Something similar worked for me -

THX for the tip!
This is what worked for me (on 2 macs). I created a new window; went to ~/Library/Preferences; resized the sidebar while holding down the option key; then deleted the com.apple.sidebar.plist; closed the window and then logged out. When I came back all new windows had the proper width.

What about the Sidebar width in the file dialog?
For example in my browser when I do a "Save Image As" or when I'm choosing a file to upload to a site?
The Finder window that appears for that has a really small Sidebar and I have to adjust it every time. It's annoying.
