guys - I've been able to get finder to show me all my folders/files just the way I like them unchecking 'use groups' and sort by kind. This way, all sub-folders show up at the top in alphabetic order and then files in alphabetic order too. However, within an application like Numbers, Excel, etc when I go to open a file, nothing I do gives me results I want. So I I do file -> open in Numbers and then click on Group items by name, none, kind, I can never get the folders or files in an alphabetic order. There is no Sort items button

Thanks

First, if you want folders at the top, there is a setting in Finder - Preferences - Advanced - 2nd Checkbox from the bottom. This setting is also true for the open dialogs.

Second, in open dialogs it's true you can't sort by anything else than name if you are in column view, but you can change to list view and then you can sort by clicking the headers.

I set that preference - thank you
In list view which I use for everything and also sorted by Name. Now, when I do File - Open in Numbers, all folders show up randomly without any order and all files are showing alphabetically

It works fine for me.
Can you share a screenshot? Maybe we can see the problem there.

From MS Excel file open window. Thanks. Group items by name

Well, you have it sorted by Date Added, with the newest at the top. Just click on "Name" and it will be sorted by that.
