Finder Spotlight/Search Function Returns No Results

Recently I've been having trouble with the spotlight/search tool in Finder. When I type in any characters, it takes me to the window titled Searching "This Mac" but no results are given, no matter what I try to search (Contents or File Name) or what characters I enter (even names of specific documents). Is there a way to fix this?

in system preferences -> spotlight make sure those guys are all checkmarked

I tried both of your responses.

It wouldn't let me Re-Index because of a Privacy List Error (unknown error).
Also, all of the options under System Preferences>Spotlight were already checked.
