Finder Won't Search My External HD

I've got a Western Digital MyBook 500gb drive that's FAT32 formatted, and I've got it pretty full, so being able to search it would help. Neither Spotlight or Find will return any results from the drive. When I choose just search the external drive, it'll spin like it's searching, but no results turn up. I've tried the add and delete from the Spotlight Privacy option, as had been recommended in another thread, but that did not work. Other details is I'm on a MacBook running OS10.5.4

Any ideas?
