Finding across/in all apps

In Safari I do a Find on the page content for a word. Then I switch to another app, and that same word or words is automatically used (or changes the previous search term I had used). Any way to turn this off? I need to look for some words in Safari, and search for other terms in other applications but am tired of having the system-wide find function keep replacing things.
