Hello I have a printer hooked up to the PC upstairs and I was trying to configure the Mac to use it but the printer setup asks for an IP address. I know the printers sharing name, which is smb://dellcomputer/printer, but an IP address?

If the printer is connected to your PC via USB then it won't have an IP address. You will need to print to the computers IP.

when you are trying to add the printer, if you click on more printers at the bottom of that window, you can add other types of network printers.

Have the printer print it out for you...

... on my HP and Samsung: I use the printer menu to print out the network report, that then tells me the IP address of the printer. Pretend it is 192.168.1.105; I type that in the address bar of a browser and that puts me inside the printer bios... then I set a permanent IP address so I will always know what it is... you surely do not have to do the same... but your printer menu should be able to print you the data that you need... good luck...
