Do you think there will be somekind of gesture to initiate the scan? Or will it be simply always on so you just put the finger on? I would speculate it will be a double click and hold home button.

Although it seems battery life would be impacted, I'm going to guess always on. I say this only because I can't think of a way to avoid Siri activation conflict. You mentioned double-click hold but I don't know...

To unlock with the scanner, I bet it'll be:

press home button > activates scanner > just keep finger/thumb in place and scan will happen, unlocking phone

Double click to access the scanner would be stupid.

Too slow and annoying.

I thought the rumoured metal ring was there so that it could sense when your finger went on the scanner?

Maybe the home button is no more click-able?
This would ease the construction, they would have to build a button that lowers WITH the sensor it. And the second positive thing is that the home buttons don't tear down anymore.
They are not that fresh and clicky after some time.

I never put much thought into it, but I kind of think you would slide your finger over the button.

Every finger scanner I've used was larger than my fingers surface so exact positioning wasn't an issue. I'd imagine it'd either have your position your finger multiple times on the initial setup or something.

Just a guess, we'll see some enough.
