How can you tell if the fingerprint resistant coating on the screen has worn off or not? Do smudges not rub off without it or does it just make it harder to rub off with a cloth?

Pull out a piece of paper and dip it in water. Then make sure 1 drop falls onto the screen. If the water makes a bubble, then the coating is still on there. If not, well then - you got your answer.

It stays on a pretty long time from my experience. I have an iPad 1 and while it has worn off a little, it's not too bad, so unless you have a really old device, you should be good. It's still on my 4S and it's stayed on for the year and a quarter that I've had it.
