Forgive the basic question, what do I need to do to prep the 4S for resale? I read about unlocking it, is that necessary if I already satisfied the contract? Do I need to remove the SIM card before selling it? Or since I completed the full contract, is it basically ready to sell on the open market? Besides wiping the phone, I am a bit lost.

Thanks!

I've sold phones in the past, and have just reset them (erasing all content). Note that the Verizon 4S is different from the Verizon iPhone 5 and 5s. The latter two are completely unlocked and work on AT&T or T-Mobile since they support LTE and Verizon has to unlock all their LTE devices as a condition of one of their LTE licenses. The 4S doesn't support LTE so only another Verizon customer can use it as a phone. The rest of us can use it as a glorified iPod Touch or a shiny paperweight.

Go into Settings>iCloud and disable Find My iPhone.
Go into Settings>General>Reset and select Erase All Content and Settings.
Remove the SIM card.

Make sure to manually turn off iMessage on your 4s before resetting it!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate it. I couldn't get a straight answer from Verizon about this. You would think that since I signed up for another two years, they might be more helpful but...
