release note is here http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/3.1a1/releasenotes/

Firefox 3.1 is developed on gecko 1.9.1. Compare to firefox 3.0.x which is based on gecko 1.9.0.x, and firefox 4, which will be based on gecko 2.0.

new stuff including

thumbstrip tab switching with crtl+Tab
support using image as borders
improved awesomebar (using user-defined characters to restrict the source for search, e.g., type a "+" to search only in tags)
10-20% javascript improvement over firefox 3.0.x

changes for developers, including CSS, DOM, XUL, can be found here http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Firefox_3.1_for_developers

This is not final 3.1 status, there will be more stuff to be introduced up to the code freeze of firefox 3.1. which is probably end of 08 or beginning of 09. Firefox 3.1 is targeting Q1 09 for final release.

Warning: alpha version, test purpose only.

This alpha gets 84/100 on Acid3, so its getting there.

mmm.. there will be plenty of time.. Acid 4 will not start until 3 major engines pass version 3. :) . And Im not sure if acid3 bugfix has finished, consider they have already fixed it twice...

anyway, firefox 3.1's standard support, should you compare items by items, is just as good, if not better, than some 100/100 acid 3 engines. Its just unfortunate that acid3 couldn't check all the items...but again, no test can be that comprehensive....:eek:

PS. This is what Acid 3 designer (presumably acid 4 designer as well) said about "lessons learned from acid3' http://www.hixie.ch/tests/evil/acid/004/
LESSONS FROM ACID3
======================
- don't include minor bugs
- don't ask for specific tests, write the tests yourself
- request feedback from early on (t=0) in the cycle, both publically
and directly to specific people
- ask for feedback about what things to test
- don't actually show the test early in the cycle, to prevent people
from targetting it while people are discussing what to test
- no performance stuff as part of the test (though as a separate
competition is ok if you get everyone to sign off on the test being
fair)
- make it have a pretty picture
========================

Just tried it then, and copy/paste STILL isn't fixed (even though a patch was suggested in the bug report at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=428096

Uninstalled it straight away as copy/paste with formatting is what I really need working.

Never mind.

Yeah, I think they find some bugs during the test, I would imagine it will eventually land before beta..will see.
