Seems like font smoothing cannot be removed in FF4. I've been able to turn it off in safari and chrome. any recommendations? thanks.

My first piece of advice for Firefox problems that can't be solved in the usual ways (Checking preferences, updating your extensions & plugins) is to mosey on over to the about:config page. You'll get a big scary warning about voiding your warranty, so dismiss that. Once here, what you'll find is a huge array of settings - fortunately, you can search to narrow things down to what you're looking for. That's exactly what I'd do here - start by searching for font.

Wait... you can disable font smoothing on Chrome?

if u disable font smoothing globally in mac using a program called tinkertool, then webpages in safari and chrome will have no font smoothing. however, the menus will continue to have menu smoothing. firefox will still have font smoothing.

This is because Firefox does not respect many system-wide settings, due to the way it is programmed.
