Firefox hijacked? OSX 10.5.8

Hello all,

Not sure If this is the right place to post this but I suspect my browser has been hijacked. I'm using Firefox 3.6.16 and OSX 10.5.8. I should be pretty up to date with security updates etc.

I'm suspicious becuase I'm having trouble with my paypal account, it's been behaving quite strangely and I cannot access paypal.com when www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ lists it as being up. How can I verify this?
I've been told hijackthis doesn't work on osx because macs don't use a registery system. If this is true, is there any equivalent anti-hijacking software?

As you can probably tell, I'm quite new to mac os and internet security! Any help at all would be appreciated but I may not be able to reply quickly as I currently have no home internet access.

Process of elimination to work out where the problem is:
Does this happen with a different browser? in a different user account? and on a different network?
(Hint: your browser hasn't been hacked)

Yes this situation (accessing paypal) was on my work network, so I suppose it could be blocked on this network, though nothing else is including torrent ports etc.

I'm guessing from your hint that it's actually true that NO form of hijacking is possible on Firefox on a Mac OS? I'd read this but it sounded too good to be completely true. (I did search the forum!)

If this is the case, the maybe the paypal thing was a glitch, I'll check it when I'm back at work but any more help you can give me on keeping myself secure online would be really appreciated because I'm used to having to do loads of scans on PCs. thanks very much.

On other pages

I am getting a pop up on my mac and my ipad for some iphone type of add that doesn't come from apple. I will capture the page next time. Do you have Mobile ME? I do. How else would it be on my ipad and mac. I have not synced my ipad for months. This started the past week.
