Any help with this would be appreciated...

You can tell Firefox to download stuff to a particular folder (e.g. Downloads), which works fine. But it always seems to download stuff to the desktop first, and move it there. Worse, if the downloaded file is set up to open with a third-party app, it leaves the file on the desktop.

This means that every time I automatically unzip a .zip file in Firefox, it leaves both the zip file and the unzipped content on the desktop. Since I like a nice clean desktop, this is infuriating.

Is there any way round this? Or is it just a bug? (I'm using the latest version, 2.0.0.9).

thats because OSX <=10.4 has no temp folder like Windows

Leopard has one, and I think Mozilla is working on this, I remembered reading some blog about this.
