The latest upgrade on our MacBook installed firevault. Now the computer is freezing and slow and not responsive. Hope this is the correct forum. It was Yosemite 10.10.3

"firevault" ?
I guess you mean FileVault? Or - Firewall?

FileVault shouldn't affect performance in most situations. You do need to give it time to complete the encryption of your hard drive. It will take somewhat longer to startup, but if the encryption is complete, you shouldn't notice much effect.
However, you can turn it off in System Preferences/Security pane, then the FileVault tab.

Did you just upgrade to Yosemite?
How much RAM do you have in your Mac?
If you have 4GB (or less), that might have much more affect than the use of FileVault, particularly if you have just upgraded to Yosemite.
