My MBP's video card finally fell victim to the congenital failure that is all over these boards, so I brought it into my local Apple Store for service. My MBP no longer automatically gets a new IP when I move between home and work. How can I get my MBP back to its old-self where I don't have to convince it to get a new IP?
Before the service, I could move my MBP back and forth between home and the office without having to take any explicit steps to reconnect to the wireless network at each location. After the service, however, my MBP's Network Preference pane says it uses a self-assigned IP whenever I switch locations. To remedy this, I turn the firewall from "Set access for specific services and applications" to "Allow all incoming connections", open a web page which results in getting a valid IP from the local access point, then turn the firewall back to "Set access for specific services and applications." At this point, I can connect just fine.
The allowed services and applications include the following, all set to "allow incoming connections":
File Sharing (AFP, SMB)
Web Sharing
iTunes
1Password
Firefox
Safari
nmbd
nmblookup
When I first turned my MBP after the service, I got a bunch of messages about letting nmbd accept incoming connections, messages which I never go before. I said yes, allow incoming connections, but I do not know what state it was in before for the service.
