I would like to protect my computer with as many firewalls as possible, I have a linksys router and Apple's built-in firewall, but I feel I need something more, do you guys have any recomendations?

Also, what is the difference in say a firewall router you buy in the store, and an enterprise level firewall made by cisco or something like it?

How can I make my Mac as strong as possible to outside attacks?

Thanks again

If you actually have those configured correctly, you should be fine, doing anything more is useless overkill which will probably just cause you grief in the longrun.

Both of these taken together and properly configured will do the trick. Anything more just makes for more convolutions.

One of the differences is how many systems it can handle effectively and how much traffic it can handle. For a few systems, the llinksys style boxes should be fine unless you have a very complex ruleset.

In truth if anything gets through two properly configured firewalls, you have a problem that a third firewall won't fix.

Unless your someone like Sun....

They take the onion skin approach to security. In a networked environment no computer can be proved to be secore so they used 7 firewalls in tandem (and thaty was years ago when a report was made so it's probably more now). The theory is that if a haker exploits a bug in one firewall its stilll got 6 walls to get through... however I doubt any of us here is as big a company as sun.

I love posts like that. Because it shows you the lack of intrest. I mean if you weren't connected you wouldn't have posted that. Next time you want to post nothing, use that statement.

Anyway, 2 configured firewall should hold off any and every thing possibly thrown at you. Since mainly:
1. Corporations are mainly targeted.
2. Macs don't get hacked easily
3. Apple firewall is good
4. an apple firewall + an router is insane really good.
5. Do you need more, in my case, no, in your maybe you feel different?

Intego firewall worked well for me in Os 9 and X version is suppose-to be much better so i recommend if you really have the money to burn on it.

I have to agree that you're probably more than covered, but if you're insistent on having more security then I suggest you go to a computer shop that specialises in old kit (like ex-company stuff) and buy a pentium-class box (166 or thereabouts) and install smoothwall onto it (www.smoothwall.org). its a free firewall OS, linux based, and basically bulletproof.

you sound paranoid. but anyways, i would go buy 3 more routers, run 13 software firewalls. ok im being sarcastic, may i ask why you feel you need so many. unless your the goverment and you know something we dont know, i think 2 is just fine, probably more than enough.
