I have dug up a semi-old (2006/7) mini-dv camera with a bunch of tapes from a holiday, what is the best way to connect this to my late 2013 retina macbook pro?

image of a similar cable I have used in the past with an old computer. The 4 pin end is what is plugged into my camera

My recommendation would be to get a DV to Firewire 800 Cable(Ebay and Amazon seem to have a ton available), and a Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt Adapter(Apple Online Store has them, I'm sure others do too).

The DV male end will connect directly to the camera, the Firewire 800 Male will connect into the female Firewire 800 port on the adapter, and the Thunderbolt Male end from the adapter will then plug in directly into the computer..
