I have an OWC Mercury Elite Pro dual hard drive enclosure that runs on Firewire 800. It is a hard drive enclosure that holds two hard drives. My questions is this: If you use OSX to set up a Mirrored Raid using the two drives in the enclosure, does the speed over the firewire halve?

If there is no Raid and you send a 1GB file to a hard drive in the enclosure it will be sent at speed X. If you set up an OSX 'software' Mirrored RAID using both the enclosure drives then won't the OSX Raid need to send it to two drives, i.e. twice and hence double the data and hence half the speed per second to send the data.

Yes I know the OWC enclosure can run as a hardware Raid but it has no warning of a failed drive so I am trying to see what the data transfer loss in speed will be. If Firewire 800 speed is halved under a software Raid then I am down to USB 2.0 speeds which is not good when my drives are 4TB each!!

P.S. I know I will get some twit telling me 'SPEED CAN'T BE HALVED'. Yes I know that. I am referring to the time to transfer an amount of data in the practical OSX 'dragging a bunch of AVIs to the hard drive' scenario.

Thanks.
