Half the product for twice the price

Really have to question the viability of a product like this when you can get hard drive enclosures with both FW 400 and 800 interfaces, which is like having this product with the option of adding an internal hard drive, for less. I like Sonnet, and wish them well with this.

Price:

$69.95 from Sonnet
$60.40 from an Amazon seller

Quite steep IMO. I think I'll pass, considering a simple FW800 to 400 adapter costs less than 10 bucks; and a cable, less than 5....

Plus Firewire can be daisy chained, and most devices - specially FW external hard drives and audio interfaces - make it simple with multiple FW ports... so the need of a Firewire Hub is quite rare. And also to consider that the moment you combine 800 and 400 devices, the whole controller goes down to 400 speeds, regardless of how you connect the devices - eg. via a hub or via a daisychain.

So thanks, but no thanks :p

I was thinking the same thing until I saw this under the Tech Specs tab:
When a FireWire 800 and a FireWire 400 device are both connected, the devices communicate with the host computer at 800 Mb/s and 400 Mb/s, respectively.

If that's 100% accurate it explains the price.
