Firewire and battery sign on start up :(

Hey guys,

Can you please help me out.
I turned my macbook (black) on and this greyish screen came up with a huge Firewire sign and battery signal down the bottom.

Whats the problem?
I pressed the on button again and it was fine but everything loaded really slow.

it just loaded slow right? not actually ran slow. i find that to be par for the course when i boot after using target disk mode. why? i don't know. i could make some guesses, but id just be makin crap up
