I have a recurring problem with an alleged Firewire external drive enclose from Maplins (cat no A60CG) It is advertised as being Firewire enable with Mac OS 9.1 and above, but this does not work on my mac. I have put a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 inside, and I have a G4 Digital Audio, 733MHz CPU, running OS 9.2.1. Note I have three identical drives which are all formatted the same under the same OS. I am now on my THIRD Hayatek drive enclosure, and I still cannot get the firewire to work with my mac.
The problem is that the disc becomes read only when connected via Firewire when trying to access the drive via Firewire (The USB works fine). the locked icon appears in the drive window, and when I use get info to access the lock option on the mac, it does not come up. The Firewire connection works fine for reading from the desk, but not writing to it. I have tried various remedies, including re-booting with extensions off, clean re-install of OS, reformatting the drive, changing the cable, and cross-swapping with the identical drives inside my G4, and all the jumper permutations. Before I take it back to my local Maplins for a refund, for the THIRD time, I am hoping someone may be able to shed some light on this ?
Here are some of the tech details :
