Hello.

I recently bought a NEC 16x DVD-/+RW, and an external firewire case to put it in. It shows up fine in toast, etc.. the problem I am running into is the write speeds. It's supposed to burn at 48x, but in toast, it will only burn at 32x, and if I put in DVD+R media that is 16x rated, it says it can only burn at 4x. Is their something possible wrong with toast? Should I delete the preferences? How fast can firewire burn at?

Any ideas are welcome. Thanks

Rick

Depends on the media you're using. I always burn at slower speeds, seem to get fewer if no coasters like that... particularly audio cds.

Yes, I know, but that is besides the point. My last DVD burner would burn at 32x (its limit) and 8x DVD (its limit)

I had a similar problem with my Pioneer 107 drive in an external housing, however the issue was solved by updating the firmware on the Drive.

I did this by downloading a file from the Pioneer website and running it from my PC. Not sure if there is a mac equivalent on the site (as it was an exe file, but there should be!).. thats something i suggest to my friends when their burners dont burn at the right speed.

But as the previous poster mentioned, media is the most likely cause of the problem.

What version of Toast do you have? I just got my external (see sig.) and it burns at the max speeds but on the dvd side it only burns at the 16x on the outer area of the disc (starts at 8x then reaches 16x). As far as I've read this is how it works and your burner may need an update (as some have said). Media is a big issue as I've found TDK, Verbatim to work the best for me with only a few bad ones.
Okay I just checked my Ver. of Toast (Toast 6 Ti.) and it will burn up to 56x on a cd and 16x for dvds. Did you go under recorder and select the speed you wanted or just used the default?
Anywho... post back, later..

newest version of toast.. it's really starting to bug me...

where would i find the firmware? NEC's webpage is a maze

i have an external nec firewire dvd-r which is actually branded a lacie drive. no matter, to get it to work properly I had to install some file that where on the lacie site that updated itunes and finder then upgrade my toaster from the website.
