Firewire Hard Drive not appearing on desk top?

I just got a external hard drive I sent to a friend back in the mail. When I plug it in via Fire Wire it powers up, I get the blue light, and feel it spinning but no drive appears on my desk top? Any advice? Sorry for the general question but I don't know where to start.

Details on the hardware:
Macbook 2GHz Black
Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEVT 320GB 5400 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s HD
Macally PHRS250CC 2.5" USB 2.0 & 1394 External Enclosure
