is there any way to access the optical drive of another mac using firewire?

is there any way to connect 2 macs via firewire WITHOUT using target disk mode?
 
1. Target Disk Mode
2. Yes, just use System Preferences > Network > Firewire to see if the connection is successfully established.

ive looked at that. all i get is a yellow light. but no ip address and no showing on sidebar. i don't know what settings to use. i have them working over wireless.

can i read the optical drive of another mac as well?
