hi!
recently my firewire audio interface (focusrite saffire pro 40) has been acting up, crackling sound, performance down to nearly nothing..
i soon realized, that it actually affected the whole system - not just the audio performance.
the problem goes away when i disconnect my sound card. connecting a different firewire audio interface causes similar problems - not the same thought (confusing.. i know.. probably a different chipset?)
i bought a pci-express firewire card with 3 firewire 400 ports - one that was said to be compatible with a mac pro (exSys EX-16500E using a Texas Instruments chip) - but as soon as i insert it in any pci-e slot (no matter 16x or 4x) - my mac doesn't start up anymore..
i was wondering if it would make sense to simply try a firewire 800 - 400 adapter.. since it's cheap.. could that work or would it likely cause the same problem.. e.g. would my 800 ports be damaged as well if my 400 didn't work?
the problem also occurs on both - the rear and the front firewire port...
i'm a bit helpless.. don't know much about the inner workings of my mac.. can anyone help?
i'm working on an early 2008 mac pro, 8x2,8 GHz, 16 Gb ram running OS X 10.7.2.
i did a fresh install of lion and all programs/drivers (formatted hard drive completely) - just to be sure - problem sticks around..
help/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
thanks a lot
cheers
