I'm contemplating purchasing an external tape drive. My Mac only has USB1, so I'd definitely want Firewire. The only readily available option seems to be the Lacie d2, which is available in 35 or 50G AIT1/2 formats. Has anyone used either of these drives, or can suggest any other products?

The key to buying a tape drive is Retrospect backup software compatibility. Tape drives are NOT Finder mountable. You need a deadicated backup software to operate them. Exabyte drives are compatible. The LaCie drives appear to be compatible also with updated firmware. See:http://www.dantz.com/en/support/compatibility_list.dtml
for details.
