I have two FireWire external hard drives - one runs off a FW400 cable and one off a FW800 cable. The write speeds are going at literally 6MB/s, where as if I plug in my USB portable hard drive, the write speeds are much higher.
The two FW drives are HFS+ and the USB portable one is FAT32.
This means that my Time Machine backups are incredibly slow. 20 minutes to backup 8GB's worth of data. I hadn't backed up using Time Machine for a good 4 months, and I don't recall it ever backing up this slowly.
I'm doing a Time Machine backup right now, and it is going 4KB/s, no joke. Spotlight isn't indexing, I'm not doing anything at all with my Mac apart from the automated backup.
