whilst trying to update my jailbroken iphone on 4.2.1, to 5.1.1 on itunes, i got the message 'cant be updated due to the phone firmware not being compatible'.

What can i do about this and what does it mean??

Thanks

You likely have an iPhone 3G. The last version of iOS that supports an iPhone 3G is iOS 4.2.1.

You are trying to install the CDMA iPhone 4 firmware onto a GSM iPhone 4.

what does that mean, sorry???

basically im trying to update the ios software to 5.1.1, then jailbreak it again

can anyone help

Click the restore button in iTunes. Don't select the firmware. iTunes will then download the correct firmware for you.

did that, and got the same message?

'The iphone could not be restored because the firmware is not compatible'???

is it because its still jailbroken???

Put your iPhone into DFU mode (Google it) and restore it in iTunes. That should get it restored to iOS 5.1.1.
