Hi- long time lurker, first time poster!
I have a 2011 MBP, and last week it just..... stopped. I suspected a dead drive, and brought it into my local repair shop, they told me the drive was fine, so I asked them could they reinstall snow leopard(because it hadn't worked for me) and it didn't work for them either. They replaced the hard drive, and the hard drive cable and I got it back wednesday. Everythings fine until today, when, I was installing a firmware update and my macbook froze. I left it for two hours to respond, at which point I powered it off, and when I turned it back on I got the gray screen with a folder with a question mark on it, and my hard drive is now making what I can only describe as an unhealthy noise. It doesn't sound bad, but just not right. I tried reinstalling Snow Leopard, but when I boot from the disc, it gives me a panic cpu 0 caller error. I read around, and this seems to be a firmware error with hackintoshes, but I figured I'd try to get the firmware anyway, see did it help. my mac is model 8,2 and none of the firmware restore discs are compatible with it. Is there any way I can get my mac up and running quickly, as I'm a college student in the middle of my finals and could really do without all this... Or should I just go back to my local shop? I don't have an apple store nearby, only an authorised reseller (I live in ireland.) and It will be monday before It gets looked at I would imagine...
