i just bought a 4,1 runing mac os 10.13 and it dont seem to be patched to 5,1 do i need to downgrade the os to do the firmware install

Hi ,
I suppose you're referring to a Mac Pro 4,1 .
If the BootROM is not cross-flashed to 5,1 , then your suspect is correct: High Sierra must have been a patched install.
The BootROM version is easy to find at: about this mac> system information
To flash the firmware you have to boot to an unpatched OS , e.g. El Capitan .
Anyway, there's a MP specific Forum with lots of info and I recommend to post there:
