Hi,

Question that occurred to me - during firmware upgrades, the optical is (always?) ejected and withdrawn as part of the process. what happens if the optical isn't installed?

Nothing, it's just a fail-safe mechanism for you to put a Firmware Restoration CD. Updates continue without problem when you don't have a DVD drive.

BTW, MP4,1>5,1 can't even run the Firmware Restoration CD, since Netkas-forum way of upgrade the firmware overwrite the BootBlock with MP5,1 BootBlock and then it's not one or another.
