So I have a blue and white powermac g3 tower that has OS 8.6 on it and I want to upgrade it to OS X. However it needs a firmware update. This was fine, I dl'd the firmware update but the stupid firmware update utility then said I needed to upgrade to OS 9.1 to install it!? And how do I do that? Oh well,,,I can BUY os 9.... This seems a bit too ridiculous, for apple to charge their users for products they don't need to upgrade to newer ones. Is there a firmware update utility you can boot from and install the firmware without booting an OS, like what if it had a blank hard drive? I can't seem to find such a utility on Apple's website.

What version of the firmware updater are you using?

This one says it will work from 8.5 through to 9.x
