First character often missed

Hi - I had an intermittent problem with my old MacBook Pro 5,1 where periodically when selecting a text box (for example the spotlight search or password dialogue) the first character typed would be missed. I figured it was a quirk of an older machine, but my new MBP Mid June 2013, NOT set up using migration assistant, is doing the same thing. Has anyone seen this before? Is there a fix?
