hello everyone,

i am having a problem with the superdrive of my first generation imac G5...

i know that it cant burn dl (dual layer) dvd's and that is fine but shouldnt it be able to read them? i have made a backup using my macbook pro on a dvd dl disc. obviously it worked fine on the MBP but then when i insert the dvd in my iMac G5 (1.8Ghz) it refuses to mount it and simply ejects it... the same dvd works fine on my laptop. what can i do?

I do not see why it would not be able to read dual layer discs by design. Since essentially any retail DVD movie with lots of extra content or a long feature film are double layered.

Does your iMac mount single layer DVD's correctly? There could be a problem with it's laser where it can no longer focus correctly on dual layer discs. You can also try loading a dual layer DVD Movie (Troy, King Kong, Lord of the Rings) to see if that is the problem.
