Hello all,

I have a 21-month old MacBook Pro 15"- well out of warranty. The casing is warped around the DVD drive and it will not read any discs- just whirs and spits them all out. A temporary fix was to use a CD cleaning disc, which it would read, then it worked with DVDs for a while, but now it won't read anything at all- even new DVDs fresh out of the case.

The matte screen also has a conspicuous scratch near the middle from an accident involving scissors falling from a shelf onto the screen.

I have contacted 2 companies, one states £225 plus labour to replace the screen, and £120 to replace the superdrive. The other states £145 for a new screen and £105 for the superdrive. Both companies also charge between £20-£30 flat fee for diagnostics. As the casing near the superdrive is warped I have also mentioned this, the first company says casing is 'very expensive' and the other says they cannot quote fully til they see the laptop.

I have previously owned PC towers, this is my first laptop and I have never had to get a laptop fixed before, so I wanted to know if these prices are reasonable and if anyone else has had experience of getting an out-of-warranty Mac fixed. I live in a small town and don't drive- both companies include a collect and return service, and the nearest Apple store to me is a 30 mile journey, which is why I haven't just taken it to an Apple store.

Advice and experiences/comments welcome,

Melissa.
