Hi guys, All of a sudden the screen started this glitchy patterned activity accompanied by beach ball and total lockout of all icons (dock). The distortions started and then 'grew' until the whole screen was covered. This is a first Gen MBP so obviously out of warranty. I'll take it to Apple store Monday but was curious if anyone has seen this or can hypothesize what is to blame.

I have had to power cycle if off and then reboot, sometimes I reboot up to 5 times before it resets to normal function, lots of times it has the 'glitchy' appearance immediately as shown in pic.

GPU failure, messed up VRAM, or overheating GPU.

The former two require a new motherboard while the latter requires only a new heatsink, a heatsink reseating, and/or thermal paste to be reapplied

and a motherboard would run.....? Would I be able to upgrade some specs?

Good news, the Nvidia in my MBP was known to be crap and is 100% covered unless they find moisture damage. Yay! Unless they call with forecast for drizzle.

If you have a First Gen MBP, then you don't have an NVIDA GPU, but instead, you have an ATI GPU. You can check what type of GPU you have by opening System Profiler, then clicking on Graphics and Displays.

That's what I thought, maybe the Genius miss-spoke or didn't realize it. Apple has it now so we'll see.

Did they do an NVIDIA GPU test and it failed so now they have it? If it failed then maybe because it because of the GPU being an ATI. Maybe they'll do it free while not knowing it. Good Luck.

Picked up my MBP today with new Logic Board...Free Of Charge!
Chipset Model: ATY,RadeonX1600

I also love that they clean your keyboard and pam rest. Looks like new!

Awesome!!!

Congratulations on the "new" computer. Do the fans sound different by any chance? Do they start and stop more often?
