hey

I have a first gen ipod touch on 2.2.1 and would like to update it to iOS3, when it is connected in itunes when I click update it says it is the latest version already.

I have the 3.1.3 firmware on my computer (windows)

question:
do I connect the ipod normally and then shift click 'check for updates'
or
do I connect normally and shift click 'restore'
or
do I put it in restore mode/dfu and shift click either 'check for updates'
or go dfu but click 'restore'

also I read that there was problems doing this with the 3.1.3 firmware if that is the case would it be better doing it with say 3.1.2 then normally updating the ipod in itunes after it is working?

thanks for the help

nope it says latest version already, I suspect this is because the 3.x firmware was a paid upgrade, I have done the upgrade from 2.x to 3.x using the shift click method before I just cannot remember which way I did it as it was a few years ago when 3.x first came out.

Also to add does anyone know of any problems with doing this in itunes 10.1?

Shift click restore should definitely work. Shift click update might or might not work -- can't remember if going from 2.x to 3.x required a restore or not. In any case, there should be no need to go into DFU unless something goes wrong during update/restore.
