Using Safari, first go to the VIEW item in the menu bar, then check to SHOW TAB BAR. Once that's on, slide all the way over to the right and you'll see a small "+". Click on it and you'll get a new tab.

On FireFox, you can go up to the Menu Bar, click on FILE and then NEW TAB.

Hopes this helps.

thanks.. how do i click a link and have that open in the background?

I've set up my trackpad to 'tap to click'. To open a link in a new tab, I do a 2-finger tap and from the menu 'Open link in new tab'. Right click would perform the same thing. Not sure though how to open a link to a new tab in the background and keep the original tab as active.

Safari has a preference to open all links in new tabs if that's what your looking for.
I think cmd click does something similar no?

thanks for all the replys... id love to just click with 3 fingers or something and have it go to the background without any other steps or keyboard involvement

You could try looking for extensions. I did a quick look and found one that works with a mouse, but not touchpad.

Download Better Touch Tool. It’s probably one of the best apps I’ve ever downloaded on my MBP. You can completely customize everything your mouse does. Just set it so in Safari (or whatever browser you use) a 3 finger click will open link in new tab. Basically:

Select your browser > Touchpad gesture = 3 finger click > Predefined Action = cmd+click

and your all set.
