Anyone have any tips that they have experienced in having a Mac that I could configure on the get go when I receive my Macbook Pro?

Things that, by default, should be a default, etc.

Anything really...for a MBP.

I always set my dock to auto-hide but other than that it's pretty good out of the box.

timemachine

definetly invest in an external and use time machine, if you ever have to reformat it makes it so much easier to grab files.

One thing that most people forget to do with a new Mac is to place it on the center of the floor surrounded by apple scented candles and pray to Apple gods for a quality computing experience.

But besides that its pretty good out the box. You should read the forums after you get it so you know what type of apps to get, and please read the included manuals.

Get:
Perian
Flip4Mac
VLC
SMC Fan Control

Read MacRumors getting started guides and most importantly, Keep an open mind to the new concepts you'll be learning.

P.S.
even more importantly ... Have fun

I always run a GeekBench and X Bench when new and store a text copy to see if the thing slows down over time.

Another vote for Office. The typical .docs I save are 45kb. Pages it's 225kb. WTF? A couple of thousand of them seriously add up!

I second those. I also suggest getting a program called Caffeine which will never put your screen to sleep so long as its on.
