Damn, I love the pictures that my Sony Rx1 takes but I might selling it for this. I'm glad Sony is innovating again.
 
Kinda nice but somewhat ridiculous as well. Considering the size, why not just take a point and shoot with decent optics with you?

Will this be Sony-only or will it work with other brand phones too?
 
Per the link it will work on iOS and Android devices. It will NFC though so I guess Sony assumes that the new iPhone will have NFC.
 
More interested in the Honami. Hopefully it's a Xperia Z with more up-to-date hardware and a better screen.

1) The name of these cameras is actually “Smart Shot“. It’s a mix between Smart-phone and Cyber-Shot.

2) The SmartShot lenses have in lens stabilization!

3) Again, it’s compatible with all Android and iOS devices via Playmemories APP (the new version will come out soon. My sources tested the BETA version). Connection via Wi-Fi/NFC

4) Videos in HD video 1080/30p, format MP4. Can be recorded with low noise even in dark places.

5) The captured image is saved automatically in both the smartphone and memory in the camera.

6) You can control zoom, exposure, white balance, and focus on your mobile device.

7) The QX10 has the same 1/2,3 inch 18 megapixel CMOS sensor and f/3,3-5.9 lens as the Sony WX150 ($400 on Amazon). WIll be priced at $250.

8) The QX100 costs $450. That is $300 less than the price of the RX100MII camera ($748 here at Amazon) that features the same sensor and lens! Greta pricing! You can get the best compact camera yet on market for $300 less.

Pretty interesting idea, definitely out-of-the-box, if a bit half baked. 1" sensor + good optics with a smartphone's sharing and editing capabilities.

My concern is stamina. This thing's basically a camera without the grip and battery housing. So where does the battery go? How big is it?

Of course it has an own battery (see picture below). How would you otherwise use it remotely as shown in one of the pictures above ?

I'm aware that it has got a battery. Just wondering if it can last long enough to reasonably replace a camera during a day of vacation. If it can't, not sure how most people can justify buying this for better quality everyday spur-of-the-moment shooting. Plus, this is on top of smartphones' battery limitations.

Aha. That's a good question I have been wondering about myself. With a normal compact camera I think you can take something like 300-400 pictures on a single charge. Will be interesting to see how these lenses perform.

One more day to go and we'll know. :)

for the first time in 15 years Sony is about to break all records with the new QX Lens Camera announcement. According to multiple sources almost all big stores from Asia, Europe and North America already preordered more QX cameras than any other A or E-mount, Cybershot or RX cameras released before. These are the info I got from them:

1) All major US and EU stores preordered more QX100 and QX10 cameras than any other Sony camera before (in terms of item numbers and large stock preorders from stores (not from single buyers)).

I do love the idea and its realisation, but I wonder whether you can use it in full/partly full manual mode. I never shoot automatic, always play around with the aperture to get the DOF I want.

...that the QX100 for instance is essentially a RX100M2 that you get for $250 less because you use your phone as the viewer.

I think I might be interested if they came out with a compatible case for the Note 3. This thing probably wouldn't look too bizarre on that phone since it's already so huge.

EDIT:

Lame, I just read that the clip on these lens cameras stretches to 75mm max, which means too big for the Note 3 :( So now I'm really hoping they come out with a Note 3 case to attach it to.

I whish there weren't other differences. Sadly, there are:

- no RAW
- no decent video recording
- no flash / no flash hotshoe / no external mike connector etc.

I in no way would pay $500 for it. There is no point in paying so much money for it when you can have a, if you need RAW / video / flash, VASTLY superior camera for $250 more.
