Hello Folks,

My wife would be switching on iPhone for the first time and I was trying to figure out the best iPhone she could get from the current available phones. I thought about iPhone 8 as her first phone but then I thought why not start with the latest gen maybe XS. Any thoughts would be really helpful. Usage would be limited with no config, space etc. requirements

The nice thing about Apple is they have a no-questions-asked return policy of 14 days. So really she can get any iPhone she wants and see how she likes it for two weeks. If it's too big/small/tall/whatever, she can take it back and get something else.

That said, I have an iPhone 8 for work and a XS for my personal and I enjoy both. Sometimes I wish I could swap SIM cards and take the 8 home but that's likely because I rarely actually use it and it feels more new.

So basically she will never miss the touch Id, home button if she goes for XS because she has never used an iPhone.

Also on the pricing 8 costs me $1129 AUD whereas xs is $1600 AUD but at the same time I was thinking would it make sense to buy 3 gen old phone or just give her the latest one and let her form her own opinions on XS

8 is one generation older, not 3. 8 launched alongside the X in 2017.

If you are not hung up with tech specs, the XR might fit the bill nicely. By that I mean the XR does not have these:
- 3Dt
- dual cameras
- OLED
- (I believe no HDR/dolbyvision support)

Yeah this looks good to me and should be okay. I did a side by side comparison of XR with XS and realised a newbie won’t be able to tell these differences unless you’re a pro and you’re after strong tech specs.

I would do the XR over the 8. I have a max currently, and an 8...my son has an X (I need to sell it) and an XR. I greatly prefer the XR over my 8.
