Apple's description of phone battery life is really irritating to me. They don't say what it is, they just compare it with some other phone.

I currently have an iPhone 8+, I'm thinking of getting an iPhone 11 Pro Max.

How much battery life can I expect? In absolute terms, please!

Can anyone contribute to what the actual real-world usage hours are of the XS Max has been, so we better know what to really expect from Apple's "5 hours" more claim?

Well, they're saying the 11PM is now the model with the longest battery life of any iPhone, so you're getting more than the XR which was already better than the 8+. Battery usage will be a highly personalised metric that will vary from charge cycle to charge cycle anyway, so vague averages are about as accurate as they can realistically give.

Five more hours relative to the previous mentioned iPhone in accordance with their in-house testing methods, which for many but by no means all users aren't terribly far off from real-world values. Different entities which test these values use different testing systems to draw their own conclusions. What matters is that this amount will probably scale relative to your previous usage numbers. So if you were normally getting some 70% of the advertised battery life you may get some 70% of the advertised increase in battery life. That said, the means through which they have increased battery life may shine more or less under different type of use loads.

So the answer is it depends on how you use your phone.
