Apple has officially announced the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, featuring 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays, respectively. At first glance, the iPhone 14 models may seem to be an iterative upgrade compared to the iPhone 13, and while they may look unchanged other than the larger size, there are several noteworthy new features for the latest iPhones.

Below we've listed five lesser talked-about features and changes coming to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Keep reading to learn even more about the latest iPhones.

Your iPhone 14 Will Get Less Hot

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are powered by the same chip that powers the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Compared to the A15 Bionic variation used in the regular iPhone 13, the enhanced version of the A15 chip has five GPU cores instead of four. The added GPU core should improve graphics performance across games and other apps.

With the more powerful chip, Apple has reworked the internals of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus to better manage heat. These changes will mean iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus customers can get longer battery life, use apps and games for longer, and more without their iPhones getting hot to touch.

The Flash is Brighter

Alongside a few new camera features, Apple has made the True Tone flash on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus up to two times brighter in certain conditions. With the new flash, an improved lens, and updated image signal processing, Apple says iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus offer 2.5x better low-light performance on the Main and Ultra Wide camera.

iPhone 14 Plus Is a Battery Monster

The iPhone 14 Plus has the longest battery life ever in an iPhone, according to Apple. Thanks to its larger size, the iPhone 14 Plus has a larger battery than the iPhone 14. Previously, the larger 6.7-inch display was only available on the highest-end Pro Max iPhones, which also had a larger battery. The iPhone 14 Plus, unlike the iPhone 13 Pro Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max, doesn't feature the most advanced and battery-hungry features like a ProMotion display.

The lack of advanced features, plus the larger battery and updates to the internal design, mean the iPhone 14 Plus is the best iPhone for customers who value long battery life. Apple says iPhone 14 Plus customers can get up to 26 hours of video playback compared to the 20 hours on the standard iPhone 14.

Selfies Now Have Autofocus

The front camera on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus now supports autofocus for the first time to make images sharper and more detailed. Along with autofocus, the front-facing camera on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus now have a larger aperture which yields a 2x improvement in low-light performance.

Colors: Brighter Red, Lighter Blue, and New Purple

iphone-14-iphone-13-colors.jpg

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are available at launch in five colors: Midnight, Purple, Starlight, (PRODUCT) RED, and Blue. Compared to the iPhone 13, the colors have been slightly tweaked in shade and brightness. The (PRODUCT) RED iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are considerably brighter than the red color option on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. Other colors, like Blue, have been made less saturated on the iPhone 14 compared to last year's iPhone.

Colors like Starlight and Midnight remain unchanged at first glance. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus comes in a new Purple color option not available with the iPhone 13, and the iPhone 13, which stays in the lineup, comes in a Green color option not offered to iPhone 14 customers.

I think “iterative upgrade” is the correct expression.
Agreed, for the 14 it sure is one. That's just Apple trying to give people more of a reason to spend more and get the Pro which got real upgrades. Classic upsell move and smart business. There's a reason they are so profitable.

I think the 14 Plus will alone sell more than rest of the devices put together. Its a steal for people who have been buying the Pro Max devicss solely for their screen and battery size.

Purple! That new colour isn't purple. It's a sort of very pale lilac. And Pantone agree with me. Below is Medium Purple C, which is slightly bluer and darker than Pantone Purple but very much what I think of when someone says "purple"! Fit for an emperor.

Your iPhone 14 Will Get Less Hot

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are powered by the same chip that powers the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. Compared to the standard variation, the enhanced version of the A15 Bionic chip has 5 GPU cores instead of 4. The added core offers higher levels of performance across the iOS experience. With the more powerful chip, some customers may be concerned over their iPhones getting hot during usage and gaming.

To address this, Apple has reworked the internals of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus to better manage heat and thermals. These changes will mean iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus customers can get longer battery life, use apps, and games for longer, and more without their iPhone getting hot to touch.
This makes no sense. If you make the passive cooling more efficient, that means the phone will feel hotter to the touch. Removing heat from the internals, means the chassis will be hotter because the heat needs to go somewhere. And then also add the extra gpu cores on top of that.

I think it will sell the least by far. The entry level 14 is still enough for most people and will be the go to for the lay user. Those who want the extra features without a massive surfboard will get the Pro, whilst those who have to have the most expensive option will get the Pro Max. That puts the 14 plus in a tight spot. It’s almost as expensive as the Pro too. It’s hardly as if 6.1 inches is small either, it’s not as if we’re talking about 4-5 inches for the standard versus the plus. 6.7 is well beyond the sweet spot for many (most?) users

Hmm dont all notch phones have auto focus on selfie camera?

Edit: Nevermind, I googled.

I think the plus will sell very well to younger people / people using a lot of social media. People who want the biggest screen and the best battery life.

While I'm also on the side that prefers the 6.1 as a sweet spot, a perfect compromise between battery and size. I also think a lot of people just want bigger displays and bigger batteries because they don't use laptops or tablets and iPhones are their only screens so it makes sense for them to get a larger display and a full day battery.

Only really interestimg new thing - that island ui overhaul (btw much needed) aint available for ip14 and older iphones - purely as upsell decision, sad that some new ui/ux upgrades will be differentiation tools since now

Well the island uses the new display, so it can't really work well on the other models.

Perhaps vapour cooling chamber is going to be inside the iPhone 14pro and pro max models . Guess we will have to wait for the tear down videos to know for sure

The standard iPhone has always sold the most & when there's 2 screen sizes the bigger sells best. The iPhone 11, 12, & 13 all outsold both the 6.1" & 6.7" Pro phones combined. Before that the Xr outsold the Xs & Xs Max combined. That $200 difference in the US is several hundred in other countries, money talks.
The 14 Plus will smash the Pro's in sales like guitars 🎸

Wait, is that saying we can order product Red for the Pro model? That would be awesome.

edit: must be a typo, no product red for the Pro on Apple's website. Bummer.
