Hi I am getting a bit frustrated with the photos app on my new M1 MBA and hoping someone can help me please.

My previous MacBook was a 2011 MacBook Pro. I had iCloud set up on my iOS devices but turned off on my MBP. I had "My Photo Stream" on my Mac instead.
Previously any photo that I took on an IOS device would automatically over the air upload an original local copy to my photos app on my MacBook. (Note this was not done via iCloud) It also meant that any photo I deleted off my iOS device would remain on my MBP in the photos app. This suited me perfectly as it kept my iOS devices clutter free and yet kept a copy on my MB.

However now on my new MBA, there doesn't seem to be a way to do this and it seems the only way to get photos I've taken to appear automatically on my MBA is to have iCloud photos turned on my MBA. This is super inconvenient as I have thousands of photos on my Mac from holidays etc that I don't want appearing on my iOS devices as I find this very cluttering.

Is this correct and my old way of doing this is no longer an option or am I missing something.
I don't want 8000 images showing up on my iOS devices even if they're just in the cloud. I prefer keeping my camera roll at around 300 pics.

Thanks
